Dear Neighbours and Community Members,

Jim’s Cafe has been serving the Lord Howe Island community since 2021 as a welcoming, alcohol-free social hub offering healthy, organic food and excellent coffee. To continue improving our services and better meet the needs of residents and visitors, we are requesting amendments to our business license.

Our current license conditions restrict us to:

• Operating only between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m.

• Seating limited to 12 temporary seats which are intended solely for customers waiting for their takeaway orders.

• Operating under the classification of "Takeaway Coffee Shop," which mandates the exclusive use of disposable packaging.

• Noise restrictions allowing only low, inaudible music.

We are proposing the following amendments:

1. Extended operating hours: 6 a.m.–6 p.m.

2. Increased seating capacity: 20 permanent seats, allowing customers to comfortably enjoy their coffee and snacks on-site.

3. Reclassification to "Coffee Shop": Allowing us to use reusable dishes and sustainable options instead of being restricted to disposable packaging.

4. Standard noise allowance: Consistent with other local businesses, permitting background music during operating hours.

Update 06/01/25: We have decided to remove our request for amendment to our noise limit. Our intention was never to increase our volume but to bolster ourselves against complaints from antagonists, however, in the interest of preserving wider community support we will leave our noise limit as it stands.
